Malay in quarters, top seed Gaurang ousted
Gandhidham 10, February : Surat’s Malay Thakkar, veteran national champion, cruised into quarterfinal of the men’s 49+ event after decimating Amit Khandhar 3-0 at the
Gopal Namkeen 2nd Gujarat State Masters Table Tennis Tournament organised by Table Tennis Association of Ahmedabad under the aegis of Gujarat State Table Tennis Association and Gujarat State Veterans Table Tennis Committee at the Spinters Club in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
Malay’s biggest threat and top seed, Gaurang Doshi, however, went down 1-3 to LV Thakre in a closely-fought pre-quarterfinal encounter.
Ahmedabad’s Sunil Parmar and Rajkot’s Sikandar Jam won their pre-quarter final matches to book their quarterfinal berths in the men’s 49+ event.
Top seed in men’s 39+ event Viral Patel of Surat posted a comfortable 3-1 victory over Ahmedabad’s Amish Patel to storm into the semi-final. Second seed Bhinnang Kothari too registered a facile 3-0 win over Bhavnagar’s Ghanshyam Thakkar to enter the last four. Third-seed Mihir Vyas had to dig in deep to overcome the strong challenge mounted by Viral Patel of Ahmedabad and win his quarters tie 3-2 to enter the semis.
In the 59+men’s category, third seed Satish Patel of Vadodara cleaned up Marzban Italia 3-0 to make it to the quarters. Haresh Rathod of Gandhinagar pipped Prabhakar More to the post and registered 3-2 win to book his quarters berth. In yet another close match, Arvind Ambastha held his nerve to beat Haresh Lakhani 3-2 to enter the last eight. Rupesh Shah, however, had an easy outing against Anil Bhaskran as he posted 3-0 win in his pre-quarters match.
