Top honours for Karanpal, Radhapriya at State Championships

Ahmedabad, Oct.2: Bhavnagar’s third seeded Karanpal Jadeja played some scintillating table tennis as he toppled the top seed Akshit Salva of Ahmedabad to win the men’s final of the Servo Hypersport F5 Gujarat State and Inter-District Table Tennis Championships 2023 which is organized by Gujarat State Table Tennis Association (GSTTA) from September 27 to October 2 at the SAG Sports Complex, Khokara in Ahmedabad.

Indian Oil is the title sponsor while GMDC is the associate sponsor and the tournament is supported by Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG). Stiga is the equipment partner of the tournament.

Karanpal, who won the Surat leg recently, rode on confidence against the more-favored Salva and took the first game. Akshit did comeback by winning the second and the fourth game but the Bhavnagar paddler closed the match 4-2 with ease.

Gandhinagar’s star paddler Radhapriya, second seed, lived up to the expectations as she claimed the women’s title with a 4-0 victory over fifth seed Oishiki Jjoardar of Ahmedabad.

There was some consolation for Oishiki as she made a grand comeback in the state meet by grabbing the U-19 girls title after brushing aside second seed Riya Jayswal 4-0.

Ahmedabad’s young and rising paddler Mouboni Chatterjee managed to pocket double crown when she won the sub-junior girls upsetting the top seed and city mate Jiya Trivedi 3-2. Mouboni, seeded eighth in the U-17 girls’ event, then took out Navsari’s third seed Siddhi Bulsara 3-0 to win her second title of the tournament.

Top seed Armaan Shaikh of Aravalli walked away with the U-19 boys title with a comfortable 4-1 win over arch-rival second seed Burhanuddin Malubhaiwala of Surat.

There was more good news for Aravalli as Janmejay Patel, third seed, fought well to get the better of fourth seed Aayush Tanna of Surat to take home the boys U-17 title.

Third seed Arya Kataria of Ahmedabad registered an upset 3-2 win over top seed Malav Panchal of Ahmedabad to capture the sub-junior boys (U-15) title.

Hosts district Ahmedabad walked away with the overall championship trophy after registering maximum top finishes.

Gujarat State Table Tennis Association president Shri Pramod Chaudhary said. “With this, its curtains for table tennis season this year. We witnessed many new paddlers coming to the fore and we wish to create many more good players from the state”.
