Akshit, Radhapriya crowned champions

Jamnagar 13, August : The 6th State Ranking Table Tennis tournament here at JMC Sports Complex ended on a thrilling note when Akshit Savla of Ahmedabad made one of the memorable comebacks of the men’s final to be crowned champion. This was the second title of the season for Akshit.

The competition was organised by Jamnagar District Table Tennis Association under the aegis of the Gujarat State Table Tennis Association.

The Men’s summit clash was between Akshit and Buhranuddin Malubhai of Surat which lived upto the expectations, keeping the spectators on the edge of their seats.

At one point of time it looked Buhranuddin, leading 3-1, would walk away with the trophy. However, Akshit had different ideas and he changed gears in the fifth game with some outstanding backhand and forehand winners. He also forced Buhranuddin to commit a few errors. The match which saw crowd also getting excited and emotionally involved, Akshit won 8-11 8-11 11-7 11-13 11-8 12-10 11-7

Radhapriya Goel of Gandhinagar made an immediate impact upon her return as she walked away with the Women’s title. This was third Women’s title of the season in as many outings for Radhapriya. She had missed Baroda as she was on national duty at the World University Games in China. The third seed faced the top seed Kausha Bhairapure of Ahmedabad for the crown.

Displaying her well controlled backspin, smash and forehand drive, Radhapriya gave very little room to Kausha. In fact after going 3-0 up in the best of seven games final, Radhapriya did not relax and became all the more attacking. In the fourth game she dropped only one point to win 11-7 11-7 11-7 11-1.

Meanwhile, Pratha Pawar of Ahmedabad completed a grand double. Pratha, top seeded in U-17 girls defeated her citymate and seventh seed Nidhi Prajapati to win the title. Nidhi won the first game but Pratha came back strongly to win the next three games and the match 9-11 11-6 11-6 11-1.

Earlier, Pratha was crowned U-15 girls champion. The title clash witnessed top-two seeds Jiya Trivedi and Pratha on either side of the table. The all-Amdavadi contest was dominated by Pratha with some outstanding winners and first serves, winning the tie 11-5 11-9 11-7.

Nidhi compensated for her U-17 loss with a thumping win in the U-19 girls final. Pitted against Khushi Jadav of Bhavnagar, Nidhi looked in total control of the game with some exciting serves and forehand push. The Amdavadi without dropping a single game record an 11-3,11-5,11-4,11-8 win.

It was win some lose some moment for Dhyey Jani of Bhavnagar as well. Like Nidhi, Dhyey contested in two finals – U-17 & U-19 Boys section.

Seeded second Dhyey defeated Janmejay Patel of Aravalli in a five-game encounter 11-8 11-8 10-12 8-11 11-9. However, in the U-19 Boys’ final he went down to Arman Shaikh. The match which was stretched to seven-game thriller noticed the calm and composed attitude of the Arvalli boy. Arman remained unnerved and delivered a couple of sensational backhand winners to produce an 11-7,3-11,10-12,9-11,11-8,11-8,11-7 win.
