Upsets galore in early rounds at Jamnagar State TT
Jamnagar 12, August :Ahmedabad’s Sahibjot Jaggi and Sujal Kukadia stole the thunder at the sixth leg of the State Ranking Table Tennis tournament commenced here at JMC Sports Complex. Both caused upsets in their respective categories.
The competition is organised by Jamnagar District Table Tennis Association under the aegis of the Gujarat State Table Tennis Association.
Late on Friday night, competing in the Men’s section, unseeded Jaggi caused a major upset in the second-round match when he outplayed third seed Arman Shaikh in straight games 11-4 11-8 11-4. Jaggi, known for his unconventional style of play, did not allow his young competitor, Arman to settle into the game. Unfortunately, Jaggi could not continue the momentum and ran out of steam against Jalay Mehta of Baroda in the pre-quarters. He bowed out 4-11 1-11 9-11.
Elsewhere, it was smooth sailing for other seeds. Top seed Burhanuddin Malubhai, Akshit Savla, war horse Jignesh Jaiswal and Jayneel Mehta all entered the quarterfinals.
It seems the third seeds have been at the receiving end in Jamnagar. On Saturday, in the third-round tie, in the U-19 Boys’ Section, Sujal Kukadia of Bhavnagar defeated third seed Himansh Dahiya. Sujal too needed three games to record an 11-9 11-6 11-9 win over Himansh. Fourth seed Aayush Tanna also made an early exit going down to Ahmedabad’s Malav Panchal. The unseeded Malav won 8-11 11-6 7-11 11-6 12-10.
Not only men but also the women’s category witnessed an upset win. Jamnagar’s Tanisha Katarmal recorded the most memorable win of her career so far. In the first round of the women’s category, the local player without dropping a game defeated ninth seed Khushi Jadav of Bhavnagar 14-12,13-11,11-5.
