Burhanuddin, Filzah eye double delight
RAJKOT, Oct. 31: Burhanuddin Malubhai and Filzah Fatema Kadri will be pumped up as the star duo from Surat will be looking for double delight at the 2nd Gujarat State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament (Phase II), organised by Rajkot District Table Tennis Association under the aegis of Gujarat State Table Tennis Association.
While Burhanuddin will eye the Junior Boys’ (U-19 and U-17) titles, Filzah will be hoping to win the Women’s as well as Junior Girls’ (U-19) titles in the tournament that is supported by Western Railway Mazdoor Sangh.
At SNK School indoor stadium in Rajkot, second seed Burhanuddin came from the brink to beat third seed Harshil Kothari of Bhavnagar 11-3, 8-11, 7-11, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8 in the Junior Boys’ (U-19) semis.
He will now face a pumped up Chitrax Bhatt of Ahmedabad as the top seed, who avenged his 3-4 Men’s pre-quarterfinal loss against teammate and fourth seed Abhilash Raval with an 11-8, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4 win.
Meanwhile in Junior Boys’ (U-17) semis, top seed Burhanuddin summoned all his energy to beat teammate and fourth seed Shlok Malpani 11-9, 11-4, 11-5, 9-11, 10-12, 12-10. He will now up against another teammate and second seed Shlok Bajaj who turned the tables with a 4-11, 8-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-7, 12-10 over third seed Arman Shaikh of Aravalli.
On the other hand, third seed Filzah shocked second seed Prarthna Parmar of Bhavnagar 11-6, 11-13, 11-4, 11-9, 11-7 in the Women’s semis to set up final date with top seed Kausha Bhairapure of Ahmedabad, who beat fifth seed Namna Jayswal of Bhavnagar 12-10, 11-7, 12-10, 5-11, 11-9 in the other tie.
In the Junior Girls’ (U-19) semis, top seed Filzah edged out fifth seed and teammate Mili Tanna 11-8, 13-11, 11-7, 11-7 while second seed Namna defeated Ahmedabad’s Pratha Pawar 12-10, 11-5, 12-10, 11-5.
It was not all over for Mili as she will be in contention for Junior Girls’ (U-17) title after her fighting 14-12, 11-13, 14-12, 6-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-8 win over Ahmedabad’s Nidhi Prajapati in the semis. Mili will face teammate and third seed Arnee Parmar who shocked second seed Pratha 11-7, 6-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7 in the other match.
Top seed Ishaan Hingorani of Kachchh kept his hope alive for the Men’s crown as he ended Bhavnagar’s Karanpal Jadeja’s impressive run in the tournament with a 9-11, 14-12, 11-6, 12-10, 11-6 win in the semis.
He will now face seasoned Jalay Mehta of Baroda who beat spirited Shlok Bajaj, the second seed, 10-12, 10-12, 11-7, 11-7, 11-4, 11-5 in the other semi-final tie.
