Upsets galore at State & Inter-District TT meet in Gandhidham

GANDHIDHAM, Oct.5 : The pressure of the ongoing prestigious Late Shree Mahendraray Dulerai Buch State and Inter-district Table Tennis Championships 2019 is taking a toll on seeded players. At the KDTTA sports Complex here in Gandhidham, seeded players fell like pack of cards on day-3 and day-4 in particular as underdogs dominated the table.

The biggest casualty was local boy and favourite Ishaan Hingorani. In the Youth Boys section, unseeded Smitraj Gohil of Bhavnagar produced some terrific spin-returns which left third seed Ishaan mere spectator.

“I played a blocking game, as I was more confident of that strategy. I know he is very good at counter-attacking so played safe. However, whenever I go a chance I went on offensive and surprised him to garner points,” said elated Smitraj Gohil, referring to his memorable 11-6 8-11 11-4 10-12 11-9 win. Unfortunately, Smitraj lost his round match to Dhairya Parmar of Ahmedabad 0-4. “I should have played better in quarters,” the youngster lamented.

Top seed Ishaan also lost his Men’s singles match. In quarterfinal encounter against Jalay Mehta of Vadodara 2-11 8-11 2-11 11-6 11-4 3-11.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s section Fourth State Ranking Tournament 2019 winner Divya Gohil of Bhavnagar went down to Surat’s Filzahfatema Kadri. The teenager registered a 11-9 13-11 12-10 5-11 12-10 win over the seasoned campaigner. Women’s section encountered another upset when Bhavnagar-based Kavisha Parekh got the better of Kausha Bhairapure 11-2 11-7 6-11 7-11 11-4 in the Pre-Quarterfinals.

It was win one, lose one situation for Filzah. As a top seed in the Youth Girls section, the Surti was outplayed by Namna Jayswal 12-10 11-4 13-11 11-3.
