Surat retain Junior Girls’ title
Gandhidham Oct.3: Surat Junior Girls defended their title in style with an emphatic 3-1 win over Vadodara in the team event of the Late Shree Mahendraray Dulerai Buch State and Inter-District Table Tennis Championship 2019 played at KDTTA indoor sports stadium Gandhidham. Surat has also entered final of the Women team event where they will meet Bhavnagar.
In the Junior Boys section, the title round will be played between Ahmedabad and Surat.
Surat, in the Junior Girls’ final, drew the first blood. Aafrien Murad rallied from two games down and saved a match point in the fifth game to overcome Purva Nimbalkar in a five-game thriller. Aafrien won 9-11 10-12 11-8 11-4 16-14.
It looked Surtis will have a cake walk. But Sheli Patel gave Surat camp a few anxious moments when she defeated ever-dependent Filzahfatema Kadri 11-7 11-13 8-11 9-11 to make one-match all.
Undeterred Surtis didn’t let the loss affect their game plan. Tanya Purohit and Filzah required three games to edge past the Baroda pair comprising Sheli and Purva in the doubles encounter. Filzah-Tanya registered 13-11 11-7 12-10 win.
Having gained the momentum Filzah proved to strong for Purva as the former romped home 11-5 11-9 11-8 in less than 15 minutes to help Surat defend the Junior Girls’ trophy.
Meanwhile, in the Junior Boys’ section Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar played out a thriller. The rubber went down to the wire. With 2-match-a-piece, the decider was played between Ahmedabad’s Abhilash Raval and Nandish Halani of Bhavnagar.
If Nandish came up with some outstanding down the line winners, Abhilash scored points with some terrific placements. In the deciding game Abhilash didn’t lift his foot of the accelerator to record a memorable 11-13 11-7 10-12 12-10 11-6 win.
Earlier, Dhairya Parmar had won his both the matches. He beat Nandish (11-7 9-11 11-9 11-9) and Karanpal Jadeja (13-11 11-7 11-9) without much sweat. However, Ahmedabad were guilty of some unforced errors in doubles which Dhairya-Dev Patel lost to the pair of Karanpal-Harshil Kothari. Interestingly, Abhilash, who was credited for Ahmedabad’s win had lost his first match to Karanpal.
