Gandhidham Oct.2: Surat, Ahmedabad, Baroda and Bhavnagar women teams stormed into the semifinals of the team event at the Late Shri Mahendraray Dulerai Buch State & Inter-District Table Tennis Championship 2019 got underway here at the KDTTA Indoor Sports Complex on Wednesday. The five-day competition commenced with team events and will be followed by singles, doubles and mixed doubles contests.

Gujarat State Table Tennis Association has organized the event supported by Kachchh District Table Tennis Association.

Everything went on expected lines on the Day-1. Surat women’s team led by State champion Frenaz Chipia showed no mercy as they thrashed their opponents 3-0 in every single match they played. In the Group A encounter, Surat began the carnage against Rajkot before outplaying the home team, Kachchh by the same margin – 3-0.

The last match played between Ahmedabad and Surat seemed evenly poised, at least on the paper. Both the teams had won two matches and booked their respective semis berths. Ahmedabad captained by Kausha Bhairapure looked formidable outfit and posed a challenging team. However, Suratis continued their juggernaut with an easy win.

Frenaz beat Purvanshi Acharya 11-4, 11-6 11-7 before Filzahfatema Kadri shocked Kausha Bhairapure 11-5 12-10 12-10. In the third singles, Bhavya Jayswal was too strong for Anoushka Chatterjee as the Surti romped home 11-4 11-9 11-4.

Ahmedabad Women’s team had already qualified for the semis having recorded wins over Rajkot and Kachchh.

Like Surat, Bhavnagar women too cruised into the last-four as the Group B toppers. Bhavnagar team comprising Divya Gohil, Namna Jayswal, Prarthna Parmar, Kavisha Parekh and Hetvi Raval were unstoppable. Whether it was Anand, Porbander or Baroda, there was no difference in their game or outcome. They registered 3-0.

Baroda was second team that made it to the semifinals from Group B. They beat Anand easily but survived Porbander scare. The rubber went down to the wire where Baroda women won 3-2.

Earlier in the day, the president of Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce and Industry declared the state championship 2019 open. Also present during the opening ceremony were Prashant Buch, Mahesh Gupta, Vimal Gujral, Tulsi Sujan and chief referee Hari Pillai.
