Frenaz claims Women’s Title at the Gandhidham Chambers of Commerce and Industry 3rd Gujarat State Ranking TT Tournament

Gandhidham, Aug.5: Top seed Frenaz Chipia felt a big sigh of relief when her return shot, ball, touched Kausha Bhairapure’s racquet and fell off the table in the seventh game of the Women’s final of the ongoing GCCI 3rd Gujarat State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament 2019 at KDTTA Sports Complex Gandhidham on Monday. It was the match-winning point for the Surti, who had saved two match points in previous game to record a 7-11 9-11 11-9 11-8 11-13 12-10 11-2 win.

This year Frenaz has played three different players in women’s final. Prarthna Parmar (in Surat) and Namna Jayswal (in Jamnagar) and Kausha on Monday. Unlike the previous two finals, Frenaz had a nervy start. Suffering from pain in her right leg, the Surti She wasn’t able to dominate the table and Kausha took full advantage early in the match.

Amdavadi, Kausha produced one of the finest backhand down the line winners, leaving Frenaz mere spectator. Frenaz was also guilty of some unforced errors including false serve. In the best-of-the-seven games match Kausha was up by two – 11-7 11-9.

Frenaz recovered in time to equalise, winning next two games. In the fifth game, Kausha with some forehand winners put pressure back on Frenaz to make 3-2.

In the sixth, Kausha was standing at the gates of a memorable win, leading 10-8. However, Frenaz brought her experience into play with some top-spin shots to take the game 12-10 and pushed the match into the decider.

It was all about experience and temperament in decider. Frenaz snatched an early advantage and didn’t lift her foot off the accelerator to win a thrilling and evenly contested Women’s final in recent times.

“I wasn’t expecting such a game. Kausha really played well. Leg pain got severe at times. Fortunately, I was able to win. But then, we all know, no gain without pain,” said Frenaz, in a lighter mood. Frenaz awarded cash prize of Rs.5000 while Kausha walked away with Rs.3500 prize money for the runner-up position.

Meanwhile, in Men’s section Jamnagar SRT champion Kaushal Bhatt continued his winning streak. The Bhavnagar lad outplayed Jalay Mehta of Baroda 11-7 13-11 11-9 11-8 in the quarterfinals.

Top seed and Kutch player Ishaan kept himself in the title hunt with 12-10 11-5 11-9 11-9 demolition of Dhairya Parmar of Ahmedabad on the adjoining table. Jignesh Jaiswal also kept his title hopes alive with 11-3 12-10 11-3 11-3 demolition of Nandish Halani in the all-Bhavnagar quarterfinal match. Lanky Chitrax Bhatt was the fourth semifinalist. He defeated left-handed and his Ahmedabad mate Hardik Solanki 11-8 11-4 11-4 12-10 11-9.
