Women seeds sail through to quarters
Gandhidham, Aug.4 : Top seed Frenaz Chipia stormed into the Women’s quarterfinals of the GCCI 3rd Gujarat State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament 2019 which got underway today at KDTTA Sports Complex in Gandhidham. Also advancing to the last-eight stage were Kausha Bhairapure and Namna Jaiswal.
In the pre-quarterfinal match, Frenaz, who has been unbeaten this season, needed less than ten minutes to dispatch Naitri Dave of Bhavnagar 11-7 11-7 11-3. She will meet her city mate and eighth seed Filzahfatema Kadri in the next round. Filzah, too, hardly sweat as she romped home with straight games 11-7 12-10 11-3 win over Purva Nimbalkar of Baroda
Meanwhile, repetition of Jamnagar edition’s women’s semifinal are on the cards. Namna Jaiswal will take on former champion Divya Gohil. Namna faced Purvanshi Acharya of Ahmedabad. With some clinical forehand winners Namna beat Purvanshi 11-1 11-4 11-6 in the encounter that lasted less than 15 minutes.
Divya, in the all-Bhavnagar pre-quarters, had to struggle for points versus Kavisha Parekh. In the four-game contest Kavisha produced some delightful down the line winners. Unfortunately, it came in patches and Divya ridding on her experience recorded 11-3 10-12 11-7 11-6.
Namna had beaten Divya in Women’s semifinals in the Jamnagar leg of State Ranking Tournament last month. Young Namna had beaten Divya in a closely fought contest.
Ahead of her match, here, Namna looked relaxed and sounded confident. Divya, on the other hand, will have to play her natural attacking game and not allow the youngster to dictate terms on the table to keep herself in the title hunt.
Also making it to the last-eight stage were Kausha and Prarthna Parmar. Ahmedabad’s Kausha beat Charmi Patel of Bhavnagar 11-6 7-11 12-10 11-7 while Prarthna registered 12-10 10-12 11-8 11-6 win over Hetvi Raval. Surat’s Bhavya Jayswal and Vidhi Upadhyay were also among the quarterfinalists on Sunday.
The day also witnessed qualifying and first round of Men’s and Youth Girls sections.
Earlier in the morning, the President Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce and Industry Dinesh Gupta inaugurated the tournament and declared it open. Also present during the opening ceremony were GSTTA Secretary and TTFI Vice-President Haresh Sangtani, Mahesh Gupta, Vimal Gujral, D.N. Sondhi, BSF commandant Rahul Vashishth, D.K. Agarawal, Tulsi Sujan, Suresh Gupta and Competition manager Hari Pillai.
