Krittwika wins silver, bronze on comeback trail in Turkey
Gandhidham, May 18: A day after husband Harmeet Desai’s maiden Olympic call up, wife Krittwika Sinha Roy brought more joy for Desai household. The 30-year-old, after missing the whole season in 2023 due to injury, is on a comeback trail and ended up winning a silver and a bronze medal at the WTT Feeder Cappadocia 2024, Turkey which was held from May 13 to 17.
In the women’s doubles event, Roy teamed up with Poymantee Baisya and beat ninth seed Valentina Roncallo and Nikoleta Stefanova of Italy 3-0 in the quarters and then went on to crush India’s Yashashvi Ghorpade and Germany’s Franziska Schreiner pair 3-0 to storm into the final of the women’s doubles meet.
In the summit clash, the 3rd seeded Indian pair lost 0-3 (1-11, 3-11, 8-11) to Honoka Hashimoto and Hitomi Sato of Japan to settle for the silver medal.
In the singles event, World no. 337 Roy, cleaned up world no. 104 Audrey Zarif of France 3-0 in the round of 32.
Continuing her good run, Roy, a former India regular, then upset world no. 51 Li Yu-Jhun of Taiwan 3-2 to storm into the quarters where she decimated world no. 165 Veronika Matiunina of Ukraine 3-0 to make it to her maiden semis in WTT Feeder tournaments.
Krittiwika went down to world no. 82 Satsuki Odoof Japan 0-3 (2-11, 6-11, 4-11) in the semi-final.
