It’s Malay all the way at 1st Gujarat State Masters Table Tennis

MODASA, Nov. 1: Surat’s Malay Thakkar was the star of the show as he swept the Men’s 49-59 years category with three titles at the 1st Gujarat State Masters Table Tennis Tournament 2021 that was organised by the Gujarat State Veteran Table Tennis Committee under the aegis of Gujarat State Table Tennis Association.
In the men’s singles final, Malay edged out Ahmedabad’s Hiral Mehta 11-7, 11-8, 11-9 while in the men’s doubles, Malay and Mahesh Hingorani of Kachchh defeated Satish Patel of Vadodara and Chandrakant Kantharia of Surat 11-7, 12-10, 4-11, 11-5.

In the mixed doubles, Malay and Ahmedabad’s Neha Patel overturned a two-game deficit to beat Vadodara’s Rishi Sharma and Subhangi Hardikar 9-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-3, 12-10 in an exciting final at JB Shah English Medium School in Modasa.

Neha, however, could not make it two-out-of-two as she suffered a 6-11, 12-14, 11-8, 6-11 loss to Bhavnagar’s Sonal Joshi in the women’s singles final.

Sikander Jam, Gaurav Doshi and Prasunna Parekh shone in the 39-49 years category winning two titles each.

Rajkot’s Sikanded edged out his teammate and doubles partner Gaurav Doshi 11-5, 11-9, 12-10 for the men’s singles crown. The duo then joined hands to beat Vadodara’s Malay Parikh and Ahmedabad’s Kunal Patel 11-7, 9-11, 11-1, 11-9 to pocket the men’s doubles crown.

Gaurav won his second title when he joined hands with Ahmedabad’s Prasunna with an 11-7, 11-6, 11-8 win over Ahmedabad’s Amish Patel and Vadodara’s Sheetal Shah in the mixed doubles final.

Prasunna also won the women’s singles crown beating Sheetal 12-10, 11-7, 11-6 in the final match.

Sonal won her second title when she and Gandhinagar’s Divya Pandya beat Ahmedabad’s Chaitali Udeshi and Prasunna 11-4, 11-9, 11-6 for the women’s doubles title.
