Vaghela’s golden run at State Masters in Surat
Surat November 18: B S Vaghela (66) had one of the most memorable weekends of his life, as the Amdavadi made a clean sweep at the 2nd Gujarat State Masters Table Tennis Tournament-2019 held in Surat. He claimed singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles. The tournament organized by Gujarat State Veterans Table Tennis Committee was held at Sarita Sankul and witnessed participation of 140 veteran paddlers in various age categories.
In the singles final, 64+ Men’s, Vaghela faced his doubles partner and Bhavnagar-based K.G. Purohit. After losing first two games, the match was almost over for Vaghela before he made unforgettable comeback in the third game to claim final and trophy 5-11, 5-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-6.
In Men’s doubles, 59-69 age category, Vaghela-Purohit outplayed pair of Prakash Mojidra & Ajay Patel 11-8, 11-5, 11-3. Earlier, Vaghela and his partner Jyotsna Joshi of Ahmedabad bagged 59+ Mixed doubles title. They beat another Amdavadi duo comprising Dilip Shah & Girija Kabra 6-11, 11-4, 6-11, 13-11, 11-5 in a blockbuster final.
Meanwhile, Hiral Mehta of Ahmedabad halted Gaurav Doshi of Rajkot to win the 39+ Men’s final. Mehta recorded a 9-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-9 win. In the same age group, but in Women’s section, Prasunna Parekh continued her dominance with an emphatic 11-2 11-6 11-5 win over Nita Shah of Gandhinagar.
