Tanya upsets Prarthna in first round; Nandish survives Kushal scare

The 4th Gujarat State Ranking TT Tournament 2019 begins on an exciting note in Vidhyanagar

Vidhyanagar Sept. 4: The 4th Gujarat State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament 2019 commenced on a thrilling note here at HM Patel Badminton Hall Vidhyanagar on Wednesday. The first day witnessed quiet a few surprising results, which included exit of women’s third seed and Bhavnagar-based Prarthna Parmar making an early exit.

The tournament is organised by Anand District Table Tennis Association under the aegis of Gujarat State Table Tennis Association.

In the first-round match, pitted against Tanya Purohit of Surat, Prarthna a title hopeful looked clueless as the Surti didn’t give her any room to attack. Moreover, Tanya also surprised Prarthna with some counterattacks during her straight games win 11-4 13-11 11-9.

Tanya, later, continued her extraordinary form as she advanced into the quarters at the expense of Hetvi Raval of Bhavnagar. Tanya dropped first game 2-11 but recovered in time to record a 2-11 11-5 9-11 11-7 11-4 win. Following Prarthna was Filzahfatema Kadri. In the all-Surat pre-quarter finals, she went down to Aafrien Murad 4-11 11-6 11-7 11-5.

There were no other surprises as Kausha Bhairapure of Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar’s Namna Jayswal kept their title hopes alive with wins over Mili Tanna (Surat) and Charmi Patel (Bhavnagar) respectively.

Meanwhile, in men’s section too recorded some amazing results. In-form Amdavadi Abhilash Raval suffered a defeat against qualifier Bhavin Desai of Surat. In their first-round match Desai, rolled back few years, as he registered 13-11 8-11 15-13 11-5 victory. Kushal Sangtani, playing his first State Ranking Tournament of the season, almost caused an upset. Ahmedabad-based Kushal won his qualifying round handsomely. In the main draw he faced sixth seed Nandish Halani of Bhavnagar. He earned match point in the fourth game but couldn’t convert and went down 13-11 11-9 5-11 11-13 3-11
