Joy for Roy on home turf
Krittwika downs Filzah in thriller to win women’s title in Surat

Surat, June 23: Former India paddler Krittiwika Sinha Roy of Surat needed to bring to fore all the experience to defeat her city mate Filzahfatema Kadri in a humdinger to take home the women’s final title at the Tapti Valley International School 3rd Gujarat State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament 2024 organised by Table Tennis Association of Surat District under the aegis of Gujarat State Table Tennis Association (GSTTA) at the Tapti Valley International School in Surat on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Filzah was off the blocks in a hurry and saw herself take 2-0 lead but the second seed Roy erased the deficit in no time levelling the match at 2-2.

Undeterred by her senior’s comeback, top-seed Filzah held her nerve and went into the lead again, pushing Roy to the wall. However, the 30-year-old Roy soaked up all the pressure and won the next two games to seal the match. This is Roy’s second title of the season.

Local girl Daniya Godil managed to capture the double crown after the 14-year-old pocketed the girls U-13 and 15 titles. In the U-13 final, second seed Daniya upset the top seed Khwaish Lotia of Ahmedabad 3-2, while in the U-15 final, she took care of fourth seed Mouboni Chaterjee of Ahmedabad 3-1.

There was some consolation for Mouboni after all as she bagged the girls U-19 crown by brushing aside her citymate Pratha Pawar 4-1.

The boys U-15 title went to fifth seed Dwij Bhalodia of Ahmedabad who thumped second seed Malav Panchal 3-0.

Seventh seed Jiya Trivedi of Ahmedabad sprung a surprise after she upset top seed Riya Jayswal 3-1 to emerge victorious in the girls U-17 final.

Second seed Dev Bhatt of Rajkot went past top seed and local lad Anay Bachawat 3-1 to take the boys U-13 title home.

In the U-11 boys final, second seed Henil Langalia of Bhavnagar defeated top seed Dhruv Bhambhani of Kachchh 3-1 while in the girls U-11 final, second seed Dhimahi Kabrawala toppled the top seed Misha Lakhani 3-1.

A new category-boys and girls U-9-was introduced by the organisers and in the boy’s final, Kachchh’s Rehansh Singh cleaned up Surat’s Panav Kella 3-0 and in the girl’s final, Prisha Parekh of Surat crushed Prisha Pandya of Anand by similar margin.
