Manush, Ishaan dig gold
Manush scores brace at Khelo India with singles and doubles titles
Gandhidham, Jan.20 : Manush Shah’s purple patch on the national circuit continued as he claimed yet another double on Sunday. Manush bagged the under-21 boys singles title in the Table Tennis event at the ongoing Khelo India Youth Games in Pune. Earlier, in the company of Ishaan Hingorani, Manush had stood on the top of the podium in the U-21 boys doubles event.
The outstanding performances from the paddlers also earned Gujarat an overall runners-up trophy behind West Bengal.
In a singles final, Manush overpowered Anirban Ghosh in seven-game thriller 11-8 7-11 10-12 11-9 11-7 8-11 11-4. There were few moments where the Barodian found himself in trouble, especially when Anirban won the sixth game and pushed the match into the decider. However, cool as cucumber, Manush displayed his mental strength to win the decider – 11-4 – quiet easily. “I was aggressive in my approach. But unlike in the past, today, my game aggression combined with placements and some good defensive shots,” said Manush.
In U-21 boys doubles final, leading the match by two games, one would have hardly thought Maharashtra would lose. But Gujarat staged a solid comeback in the third game and went on to win the next two also to upset Maharashtra 3-2. Manush Shah and Ishaan Hingorani (Guj) played brilliantly in the later part of the game defeating Siddesh Pande and Abduquerque Raegan (Mah) 9-11 10-12 11-6 11-5 11-7.
Manush has been in sublime form this season. Not only in the state but he has excelled in national tournaments as well. The left-handed bispectacled paddler had claimed Junior and Youth titles at 80th Junior and Youth National Championships at Sonepat last month. Manush also cruised into top-10 of the World Junior Boys rankings.
Gujarat State Table Tennis Association president Shri Vipul Mittra, IAS, chairman Shri Milind Torawane, IAS, and honorary secretary Shri Haresh Sangtani congratulated both the paddlers for their excellent achievement.
